Earlier this month, Joey the Spotted Turtle was adopted by EmNet! After bringing Joey into the world as a class project, my Environmental Literature class is very excited to see Joey go to a good home where he’ll be cared for and loved, and see their College project recognized by a multi-national corporation.

EmNet (now a subsidiary of Xylem, Inc), started an incubator company that emerged from a research project at The University of Notre Dame, and is the company behind South Bend’s Smart Sewers project. EmNet’s sewer sensory technology has helped reduce combined sewage overflows into the St.Joseph River (Joey’s natural habitat) by about 80%.

Emnet is going to be using Joey as part of their Watermark Initiative. The Watermark project is geared toward educating young people about the local watershed, teaching them about conservation, and empowering them to care for local streams, rivers, and aquatic habitats. Joey and the stories of his adventures will be used as an educational mascot for this program.

We look forward to seeing where EmNet will take Joey in the future—perhaps a mascot for the city or an animated YouTube sensations? We’ll have to wait and see what adventures await our little spotted friend!
