Since winning a generous grant from the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, fellow PhD Candidate Meagan Simpson and I have been working hard to organize the symposium “The Bible, Narrative, and Modernity,” scheduled for March 26-28, 2015 at the University of Notre Dame Conference Center.

As I wrote in July, the symposium brings renown scholars together to discuss the mutually-shaping discourses of theology and literature in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. The weekend will include keynote lectures by Dr. Misty Anderson (U of Tennessee, Knoxville) and Dr. Timothy Larsen (Wheaton College), graduate student workshops, and roundtables focused on Religion & Literature methodology and pedagogy that will include such luminaries as Gary Anderson, Margaret Doody, Richard Gibson, Romana Huk, Susannah Monta, Mark Noll, Timothy O’Malley, James VanderKam, and Henry Weinfield, along with our keynote guests. Award-winning poet Brett Foster will also be reading a selection of his recent work, demonstrating the ongoing scholarly and aesthetic conversation between religion and literature.

We are looking forward to a great turnout, as the symposium is already generating interest at Notre Dame and other institutions in the region. If you are interested in attending this free symposium, please contact me or simply come to our public events. We would love to broaden this already rich conversation to include a large community of interested scholars! For more information see the Symposium page on the Nanovic Institutes’ Website.
